Abstract. This research study presents a proposal for teaching trigonometric ratios from the similarity of triangles. This proposal is based under the fact that, in most cases, it is assumed that the support given by textbooks to teachers must be complemented with strategies to motivate students and allow them to develop further their skills in mathematics. The proposal is supported by the history of trigonometry, particularly in the study of the similarity of triangles. Also, this research also holds on theoretical foundations as the curricular guidelines in mathematics and the levels of reasoning by Van Hiele. In addition, this dissertations also relies upon the exploration of activities where use of technological tools such as GeoGebra, Excel and CAR ruler and compass. In particular, this study illustrates problems of physical nature through activities outside the classroom that show the applicability of trigonometry in other areas such as engineering. This research was developed with the participation of students from Misael Pastrana Borrero School in the municipality of Teruel, department of Huila.
