Resumen
El presente trabajo de grado constituye un recorrido por las actitudes ante la muerte presentes en la mentalidad de la población testamentaria de la primera mitad del siglo XIX. En total se hizo acopio de 207 cartas testamentales, depositadas todas ellas en el Archivo Histórico de Ibagué, repartidas entre diversas localidades, con especial acento aquellas procedentes de las jurisdicciones de Chaparral e Ibagué. El enfoque histórico que ha nutrido la investigación se encuentra anclado en la denominada historia cultural, siendo la temática de la muerte, el eje central sobre el cual han girado todas las pesquisas y análisis desarrollados. Cada uno de los numerales del cuerpo del trabajo busca dar cabal cuenta de la estructura fundamental de los testamentos y de la información en ellos contenida, tratando de hacer evidente una lógica implícita que jerarquiza el valor espiritual, antes que económico, en la elaboración de estos documentos cercana la hora del óbito.

The historical approach that has nurtured research is anchored in the so-called cultural history. the subject of death, the central axis around which revolved all inquiries and analyzes developed. Each numerals from body of work seeks to give a full account of the fundamental structure of wills and the information contained therein, trying implicit logic that prioritizes the spiritual value make evident, rather than economic, in the preparation of these documents surrounding the time of death.
