Abstract

Federico lleva varios años rodando de país en país, huyendo de Colombia o resistiéndose a regresar. Un día recibe un correo de Joaco, quien alguna vez fue su mejor amigo y actualmente vive en Colombia. Desde su silla de ruedas, Joaco le escribe contándole que en un semáforo, después de muchos años, de lejos ha visto a Emilia, un viejo amor de Federico que había desparecido hacía dieciocho años. El correo y lo que este dice llevan a Federico a recordar forzosamente, dolorosamente, sus días de estudiante de Letras en Bogotá, su amistad con Joaco, su romance corto pero turbio con Emilia, la violencia de esos años, las razones que a patadas lo sacaron huyendo del país… y también su partida de Colombia hacia Buenos Aires, ese primer viaje que le dio a entender que siempre sería un extranjero aunque Colombia lo siga a todas partes, aunque el recuerdo de Emilia lo siga a todas partes, aunque los libros y las letras y la necesidad de escribir nunca lo abandonen. For many years, Federico has been fleeing from one country to another, running from Colombia or resisting himself to return. One day he receives an email from Joaco, who lives in Colombia and was once his best friend. From his wheelchair, Joaco writes to him saying that for the first time in many years, he has seen Emilia from far away, and old love of Federico that had disappeared eighteen years ago. This email and the things it says force Federico to painfully remember his days as a young literature student in Bogotá, his friendship with Joaco, his short but troubled romance with Emilia, the violence of those years, the reasons that kicked him out of the country... But he also remembers his departure to Buenos Aires, that first trip that made him realize that he would always be a foreigner even though Colombia follows him everywhere, even though the memory of Emilia follows him everywhere, even though books and letters and the need to write never leave him. Federico remembers, rebuilds and writes in order to understand what has happened to him; how was it that all of this occurred, how he got to where he is, what should he do now.
