Abstract. In this thesis I aim to analyse the process by which journalism was professionalised in Colombia, starting from the set of policies intended to regulate its exercise, build trade associations and promote the teaching of journalism in educational institutions. This process was initiated at the end of the nineteen-forties with the establishment of press congresses and culminated in the regulation of the proffesion, the beginning of professional licenses, and the rolling out of journalism courses on a mass scale at the beginning of the nineteen-seventies. Even though this process had not been completed, and there was no majority consensus regarding what had been achieved, it demonstrated the aspiration to professionalise journalistic activity and established the basis for a wider field of study like that of communication.
