Las Nieves mil ochocientos noventa y tres

Abstract

From the top of Monserrate, to the vast horizon fo the savannah, Las Nieves refused to be pigeonholed to a single adjective. It was not the area of artisans, or the factories, or the colonial city, or the image of a new modern Bogotá. It was all at the same time, in a continuous encounter of times, spaces and memories that show the complexity that Bogotá brought about at the end of the 19th century. Beyond that repeated idea of ​​being a small and conventual city, the social and economic dynamics accounted for a much more complex and subtle urban transformation. In the tour of the entire area built in the parish of Las Nieves in 1893 we will be able to appreciate from each individual, story and place, the heterogeneity that grouped the city as an inhabited space. The encounters of apparent opposites, the struggles of interests and the permanence and transformation of imaginaries will be the entry to find why Las Nieves, resisted being described in a general way. This struggle to find a category that would manage to condition the parish in its relationship with the rest of the city, ended up becoming the engine of this research. Thus was forged the need to go door to door looking for what was happening, what issues worried the inhabitants, what ideas were left unimplemented, what impact the plans of the city within Las Nieves had, among many other unexpected scenarios that were appearing step by step.

Desde la cima de uno de los montes que enmarca la ciudad, hasta su límite con la amplitud de la sabana, Las Nieves se resistía a ser encasillada a un único adjetivo. No era la zona de los artesanos, ni la de las fábricas, ni la ciudad colonial, ni la imagen de una nueva Bogotá moderna. Era todo al mismo tiempo, en un continuo encuentro de tiempos, espacios y memorias que dan muestra de la complejidad que acarreaba la Bogotá de finales del siglo XIX. Mas allá de esa repetida idea de ser una ciudad pequeña y conventual, nos encontramos que a pesar de su limitado crecimiento físico, las dinámicas sociales y económicas daban cuenta de una transformación urbana mucho más compleja y sutil.

En el recorrido por toda el área construida de la parroquia de las Nieves en 1893 podremos apreciar a partir de cada individuo, de cada historia y cada lugar, la heterogeneidad que agrupaba la ciudad como espacio habitado. Los encuentros de aparentes opuestos, las luchas de intereses y la permanencia y transformación de imaginarios serán el punto de entrada para buscar por qué Las Nieves, se resistía una y otra vez a ser descrita de una manera general. Esa lucha por buscar una categoría que lograra condicionar a la parroquia en su relación con el resto de la ciudad, terminó convertida en el motor de toda la investigación. Así se forjó la necesidad de ir puerta a puerta buscando qué pasaba, cuáles temas preocupaban a los habitantes, y cuáles ideas quedaban sin ejecutar, qué impacto tenían los planes de las ciudad dentro de las Nieves, entre otros tantos escenarios inesperados que fueron apareciendo paso a paso.
