Resumen
Abstract
This research was approached from a quantitative scientific perspective, with a
correlational scope, following the phases proposed by Hernández Sampieri (Hernández
Sampieri et al., 2006) and Robson (Robson, 2002a). The relationship between innovation
and external competitive advantage is studied, motivated by the difference between the
number of studies focused on the internal capabilities and resources of the company,
leaving aside the impact of environmental variables. The analysis units were made up of
12 companies belonging to the hotel sector located on the Colombian north coast.
The methodological framework was based on the Theory of Economic Development
(1954), Theory of Technological Change (1956) and the Evolutionary Theory of Economic
Change (1982). In the measurement of variables and comparison of relationships, nonparametric techniques were used, validated by means of statistical power tests. The data
collection instrument has been developed from the systemic approach of competitive
advantage (de La Paz et al., 2008; Esser et al., 1996).
The resulting correlations, as well as their analyses, confirmed the null hypotheses. On
the one hand, the greater the entrepreneurial capacity, the greater the external competitive
advantage, since the indicators contained in its measurements show significant and
positive relationships. In turn, the correlational indices confirm that the greater the
organizational innovation, the lower the external competitive advantage, since its indicators
maintain a significant inverse relationship. Similarly, the findings configure the practice of
closed innovation in the sector.
