Abstract
Burnout syndrome in teachers is a phenomenon that has been getting the interest of researchers during the last two decades due to the fact that it is becoming more frequent. This phenomenon feeds upon the dynamics and challenges that education presents today. Primary and high school teachers are specially affected by this syndrome since they face a series of factors that contribute to its appearance.
This is a descriptive qualitative case study that inquired about the perceptions of nine primary and high school teachers about the factors that influence the appearance of Burnout syndrome the most. These include: work overload, working conditions in the Colombian context, dealing with parents, the education system, etc. The study reflected the complex situation experienced by teachers in the development of their work and how this affects their physical and mental health, likewise, it raises different questions regarding the way in which education is conceived in Colombia and how teachers are perceived.
