Viaje a la luna con olor a oveja

Abstract

Esta investigación artística surgió de un entrecruce entre mis recuerdos de infancia en los campos de Boyacá y de mi interés por la tecnología aeroespacial. En un comienzo me pregunté acerca de las nociones y usos de las membranas vegetales y animales que nacen en el campo, y desde allí me propuse buscar una convergencia en la cual surgieran las tecnologías boyacenses desde los afectos. Buscando antecedentes de innovaciones tecnológicas campesinas, encontré un reportaje del periódico El Tiempo del 8 de julio de 1969 en el que se entrevistaba a Raquel Vivas Rincón, de Floresta, Boyacá, quien elaboró junto con su empresa "Fábrica de Telas Huatay" un tejido de lana de oveja traída de Güicán de la Sierra, Boyacá, y la Concepción, Santander, con el propósito de cubrir el interior del transbordador espacial Apollo 11. Algo que despertó mi interés de una manera más profunda fueron las últimas palabras que Raquel dijo en esa única entrevista que dio para el periodico. Después de haber compartido datos sobre sus descubrimientos químicos, sus antepasados y las rutas económicas que conectaban el comercio de la lana con su empresa, Raquel exclama que en el interior del Apolo 11 debería oler a oveja, tal cual como el olor de la tela que tenía en sus manos. Fue esta noción de reconocer el territorio a través del olor de una oveja, lo que me llevó a preguntarme sobre el habitar de las ovejas en Güicán de la Sierra y las tecnologías que estas han desplegado a lo largo del tiempo. This artistic research project arose from an intersection between my childhood memories in the fields of Boyacá and my interest in aerospace technology. Initially, I wondered about the notions and uses of plant and animal membranes that arise in the countryside, and from there, I set out to seek a convergence in which Boyacá's technologies would emerge from the realm of affections. While looking for precedents of rural technological innovations, I came across a newspaper report from El Tiempo on July 8, 1969, in which Raquel Vivas Rincón from Floresta, Boyacá, was interviewed. She, along with her company "Fábrica de Telas Huatay," created a woolen fabric from sheep's wool brought from Güicán de la Sierra, Boyacá, and La Concepción, Santander, with the purpose of covering the interior of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. What piqued my interest more profoundly were the last words Raquel uttered in that single interview she gave to the newspaper. After sharing information about her chemical discoveries, her ancestors, and the economic routes that connected the wool trade to her company, Raquel exclaimed that the interior of Apollo 11 should smell like sheep, just like the scent of the fabric she held in her hands. It was this notion of recognizing the territory through the scent of a sheep that led me to wonder about the habitation of sheep in Güicán de la Sierra and the technologies they have deployed over time.
