Abstract
This research aims to investigate the temporal, spatial, and social impacts on early childhood in the Cauca Valley. A total of 134 individuals were studied: in utero, infant I, and infant II, from the Early Period (1200 BC–700 AD) and Late Period (700 AD–1500 AD) from cemetery-type funerary contexts. Their general health status was assessed through macroscopic observation of physiological stress indicators in teeth, the cranial and postcranial skeleton, and funerary behavior in this sensitive population segment was also evaluated using a nonparametric statistical test. In this way, a reading of the social behavior of these communities is achieved, focusing on childhood and its relevance to evolutionary change in the populations of pre-Hispanic Cauca Valley. A strong influence of the environment and ecology on childhood behavior and social change was identified among agricultural communities in the ancient Cauca Valley.
