Abstract

The expansion of the interspecific O×G hybrids (Elaeis oleifera × Elaeis guineensis) in Rot (PC), is constrained by their low and unstable germination rates. This limitation is associated with knowledge gaps regarding the nature and physiology of O×G seeds and their germination process. This work presents a state-of-the-art review indicating that the asynchrony between the physiological maturity of the embryo and the seed, relative to the commercial maturity of the fruit, is the primary cause of the low germination observed in these hybrids. Based on this, the objective of the study was to identify the optimal phenological stage (EF) to maximize germination. To this end, phenotypic variables such as embryo length, diameter, and viability (tetrazolium test) were evaluated, along with the germination of O×G seeds from two E. oleifera origins (Brazil and Peru), across phenological stages EF 709 to EF 807 of the BBCH scale. The results showed that the apical meristematic primordia (SAM and RAM) are fully differentiated from EF 800 onward, confirming the absence of morphological dormancy. Meanwhile, germination at EF 803 exceeded the reference threshold of 40% and the value obtained at EF 807. It is concluded that the maturation of the embryo, the seed, and the fruit occur asynchronously, and that seeds derived from bunches harvested at EF 803 optimize the efficiency of the germination process, thereby supporting the expansion of this crop in Colombia and the Americas
