| dc.description.abstract | This research problematizes non-linguistic animal communication from a philosophical perspective, using triangulation as the central theoretical tool. The hypothesis holds that certain non-human animals manifest communicative behaviors that allow us to postulate complex forms of relationship with other individuals and with their environment, as well as the existence of bodily cognitive processes immersed in a situated, non-reflexive normativity. The objective is to analyze animal communication as evidence of the existence of mental states and to contribute to the explanation of the ontogenesis and phylogenesis of language and thought. We understand Davidsonian triangulation as a situation in which two subjects (S1 and S2) participate in an attentional event directed at a common object (O), which implies mutual recognition of themselves, the other, and the external world. This model, originally formulated to explain the emergence of concepts such as truth, objectivity, and intersubjectivity, is explored here in its explanatory capacity when applied to animal communication in non-linguistic contexts. The study argues that triangulation is a necessary condition for any cognitive and communicative event, whether linguistic or not. Likewise, contributions from the phenomenology of perception and the body are recovered, maintaining that bodily knowledge constitutes a form of cognition also based on triangulation. Consequently, non-linguistic communication is understood as an exercise of cognition about the body of the other, opening the possibility of recognizing an expressive triangulation. This, in turn, reveals a cognitive process of exchange of mental states between animals (inter- and intra-species), in which the body functions as the engine of semiosis and the formation of meaning. | eng |
