Abstract. This work intends to analyze the letters written by Francisco José de Caldas to Santiago Arroyo y Valencia between 1795 and 1803, from a dual perspective: as a printed product resulted from a long publishing tradition, and as a cultural practice in which the subject writes in relation to others and organizes its social world. The research is based on the understanding of these documents as a source with no originals known and edited several times; with the aim to reconstruct the publishing history of this correspondence during the XIX and XX centuries, to prepare an edition of these letters as useful documentary objects for analysis, and finally, to describe the writing of Caldas from those documents related to friendship and science, covering a momentous period in his scientifical education.
