The first study evaluated whether response-dependent aversive stimulation reduced self-controlled choices more than response-independent aversive stimulation. The second study empirically tested the predictions (in-sample and out-of-sample) of de Villiers' (1974) and Baum's (2020) avoidance models with response-independent and response-dependent schedules. Forty-eight undergraduate students participated online in the first study, which comprised a two-button computerized choice task with random time and yoked variable interval schedules. Eleven undergraduate students from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia participated in the second study, which included a concurrent choice task with a switch button for variable interval and yoked variable time schedules. The first study found that the dependent aversive stimulation reduced the self-controlled choices more than the response-independent aversive stimulation, but a clear preference for the impulsive alternative did not appear (Flora et al. 2003). The second study showed that de Villiers' (1974) model fitted the empirical human data better than Baum's (2020) model during response-dependent schedules. Lastly, de Villiers' (1974) model showed higher predictive accuracy than Baum's (2020) model; however, when Baum's (2020) model used the point deduction reduction rate instead of the deduction rate, the model outperformed de Villiers' (1974) model with a higher expected predictive accuracy.eng
