Abstract. This literature review will examine the different perspectives of the phenomenon of expansion and consolidation of English as a global language, and to determine the impact of English worldwide, delimiting it on language policies and educational policies adopted globally, the translation market and the use of languages on the Internet. Documents published since 1974-2014, in scholarly articles, books, gray literature, Internet sources were studied in order to identify the main lines of approach to the aspects mentioned above, using different databases such as Academic Search Complete, JSTOR Springer Journals, Wiley Online Library, Google Books, Google Scholar and other corporate databases. Six models of expansion and consolidation of English, as well as various socio-linguistic categories associated with the phenomenon were identified; it is found that English is the most taught language worldwide as well as the most dominant in the translation market, and the Internet; a metatheory was not found in order to respond satisfactorily to the question of the literature review, but an approach from different disciplines to explain the process and the current status of English was found. This review is a general introduction to the understanding of the topic, which raises more questions and discussions on the current hegemony of English.
